In Holland water has also been used as a means of defence. The rise of the Dutch Republic in the seventeenth century made Holland attractive to foreign invaders. A Water Defence Line was built from north to south between the mouth of the Vecht and the southern branch of the Rhine. The delta environment of Amsterdam made it feasible to use the same technique to strengthen the military position of its main city.
